RIO (Railway Institute Open) is held every year in January at the iconic Railway Institute in York. The invitational tournament is now in its 31st year, and was set up by Yorkshire Badminton purposely to help with ICT selection. Yorkshire invite seven other counties to take part. This year the teams taking part were Warwickshire, Yorkshire, Lancashire, Hertfordshire, Surrey, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire along with Lothian from Scotland. RIO is always a memorable weekend for everyone involved, with a loud, lively and competitive atmosphere on and off court.
This year Warwickshire ended up convincing winners for the second year on the trot, the score lines don’t do justice to the highly competitive games that were played. On the first day we won our three group matches against: Nottinghamshire 15-0, Hertfordshire 14-1 and Lancashire 14-1. On the Sunday we played for position 1-4 beating a strong Leicestershire 12-3 and finishing off with an equally convincing win against Yorkshire 12-3.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank firstly the organisers of the tournament, Sue & John Foster who are always perfect hosts, secondly the parents for their help and support throughout the tournament and most importantly to the players, Adarsh, Caitlin, Ewen, Joe S, Joe B, Kiara, Natasha, Mia, Milly, Nathan, Luke and Victoria who played fantastically all weekend and were a credit to their parents and the county.
